Dive into July, the Busiest (Yet Laziest) Month of the Year
It’s July, and the Dog Days of Summer Are Here
Now that it’s July, we’re officially halfway through the year. Can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday we were anxiously awaiting grilling and pool party season, and now it’s actually here. Instead of dreaming of warm, sunny days, we’re living them, and often in near-90-degree temperatures.
July is a busy month. It starts off with a boom—literally—with Independence Day barbecues, pool parties, and Fourth of July fireworks. After the last sparklers fizzle out, there’s a lot to look forward to during the rest of the month, too. July also has a lot of fun food-themed holidays that are perfectly timed to summer, like National Strawberry Sundae Day (July 7th), National Blueberry Day (July 8th), and National Ice Cream Soda Day (July 20th). July is also National Hot Dog Month, National Ice Cream Month, and National Picnic Month. We think many delicious celebrations are in order.
As busy as July is, it’s also one of the laziest months of the year. Every year around this time, the heat starts to get to us. As such, the Dog Days of Summer, which kicked off on July 3rd, are in full swing. You may not realize it, but the Dog Days of Summer aren’t just an idiom to describe the hottest days of the year. They’re actually recognized by The Old Farmer’s Almanac as the 40 days under the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star.
During these 40 days, Sirius is the brightest star in the sky (after the Sun). It’s so bright, you may even be able to see it during the day without a telescope. Thousands of years ago, the ancient Greeks and Romans believed Sirius’ presence was a bad omen that would bring drought to the land and dry out the crops. While that superstition has fallen by the wayside, the constellation is still synonymous with hot weather, as it typically appears from July 3rd until August 11th, which are some of the hottest days of the year.
