5 facts about Cinco de Mayo that will leave you drunk..

Here’s a fun Cinco de Mayo game that is sure to get your party started aka get everyone drunk… that is unless you spent the better part of your elementary years learning about Mexican history, in which case this game isn’t for you and probably won’t be any fun but we are presuming that you are fun because you are a member of our sock of the month club.

Rules: Take a shot of tequila for every fact you read that you didn’t know.

Fact 1

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. The holiday is a celebration of Mexico’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 despite Mexico having a smaller army and being less prepared for battle.

Fact 2

In Mexico the Cinco de Mayo holiday is observed with battle reenactments and political speeches—it is only in America that we spend the day getting drunk on tequila and stuffing our faces with chips and guacamole.

Fact 3

The largest Cinco de Mayo celebration is in Los Angeles.

Fact 4

More than one person has claimed to invent the margarita (according to Smithsonian Magazine). It was reportedly Carlos “Danny” Herrera (something about that nickname doesn’t seem to coincide—just sayin’) developed this delicious cocktail for an actress at his restaurant in the Tijuana area in 1938.

Fact 5

According to the U.S. Census, 33.7 million United States residents come from Mexican heritage.

Bonus Fact

In Chandler, Arizona they celebrate Cinco de Mayo with chihuahua races—and they clearly take chihuahua racing seriously there, because they crown two dogs king and queen at the end of the day.

By this point we assume you’re four shots in (five if you used the bonus question—because we can’t think of anyone who would know this fact unless you have a chihuahua who has actually participated in the races). Happy Cinco de Mayo!
